The Best Easter Books for Preschoolers in 2024
My son flew through his Easter basket full of candy and toys, seeming to touch everything within a few seconds. His energy slowed down as he reached for the book inside.
“Will you read this to me, Mommy?” he asked, handing me the Easter book.
Easter baskets can often be filled with fast items that are quickly used or eaten and then gone. My favorite items to add to my kids’ baskets are good books about Easter or spring.
See the great thing about books is that they stick around. After all the energy and excitement have settled down, the book is still there. It creates those quiet, moments of connection that we all love as parents.
I’ve put together this list of my favorite Easter books for preschoolers so you can choose the perfect books to create those moments. Whether you want to teach your child about the meaning of Easter, the Easter story, or simply have fun talking about spring and egg hunts, there’s a book on this list for you.
The Best Easter Books for Preschoolers
1. God Gave Us Easter Lisa Tawn Bergren
The “God Gave Us” books tend to be more about the meaning of the topic, rather than the holiday itself. God Gave Us Easter* is no exception. Easter is about Jesus’ love for us. It’s about new life and the life that He gives us. That’s the message of this book. And while it might be a little abstract for your preschooler, I don’t think it hurts to talk about these principles early on. Easter time is a great time to start.
This is a book for teaching young kids about the meaning of Easter, but less about the actual Easter story. It will also remain relevant as they become older children.
2. The Great Big Easter Egg Hunt Beatrix Potter
It’s time to celebrate Easter but Peter Rabbit is getting into trouble. When he accidently loses all the colorful eggs he must go on a great Easter egg hunt to find them all in time for the celebration. Will he find them all in time?
This beautiful flap book is the perfect Easter gift. The Great Big Easter Egg Hunt combines a cute story about this country bunny with beautiful illustrations and interactive flaps. It will make a great addition to your Easter collection.
3. Bluey: Easter Penguin Young Readers
It’s Easter and Bluey and Bingo are worried the Easter Bunny will forget them again this year. Their fears appear to be founded when they wake up to clues instead of baskets full of candy. The girls set out on an Easter adventure to find their baskets. These beloved characters must bravely face each obstacle and even the fear that they are forgettable in this fun Easter book.
Bluey Easter is a sweet story about resilience and encouragement told in a fun story about an Easter egg hunt. It’s perfect for this Easter season.
4. The Story of the Easter Bunny Katherine Tegen
Have you ever wondered where the Easter Bunny came from? How did he become the Easter Bunny? The Story of the Easter Bunny tells his tale.
This is fiction but is told in the classic tone of a true story. The Easter Bunny learned to make Easter baskets from a generous old couple. Eventually, he went out on his own and recruited more Easter bunnies, bringing joy to children on Easter morning. It’s a cute book that teaches kids about giving to others.
5. The Easter Story Patricia A. Pingry
If you’re looking for a book that simply tells The Easter Story from start to finish, this is the book for you. It doesn’t do anything fancy. The story doesn’t rhyme. It is simply a clear retelling of the story of Jesus’ triumphant entry, death, and resurrection for young children. Some points are also made at the end about the purpose of Jesus’ death and resurrection.
Use The Easter Story to make the story of Easter clear to your preschooler and to focus on the true meaning of the holiday. This is a great book to use during this holy week.
6. An Easter Egg Hunt for Jesus: God Gave Us Easter to Celebrate His Life Susan Jones
This book does a great job at bridging Easter egg hunts with The Easter Story. When the animals go on an egg hunt, Little Bunny crunches the egg and thinks he’s ruined Easter. But when his mother tells him the empty egg represents the empty tomb and tells him that he’s unveiled the true meaning of Easter, the group learns a new lesson.
An Easter Egg Hunt for Jesus is a great reminder of why we celebrate Easter.
7. The Best Easter Egg Hunt Ever Dawn Casey
Rabbit joins the Easter egg hunt only to be disappointed by her egg-hunting skills. But when she finds a simple white egg near the pond, she’s proud to say she’s found the best egg of all.
The Best Easter Egg Hunt Ever is about caring for others and is a great way to discuss Easter egg hunts with younger kids. You’ll love the spring themes and it can even be a good way to address disappointment with not finding eggs on a hunt.
8. Happy Easter Little Critter Mercer Mayer
It’s Little Critter on Easter day! Join Little Critter as he opens his Easter basket, goes to church, and hunts for Easter eggs.
Sometimes these books can be hit or miss, but I think this is one of the better ones. It discusses Easter celebrations from a child’s perspective. Little Critter doesn’t always have a good attitude about Easter traditions, which can be relatable to some kids. I appreciate how he addresses the Easter egg hunt—by mentioning the frustrations of missing an egg, everyone trying to get the same one, and helping little kids find some eggs too.
Happy Easter Little Critter is a good one to help young kids process what happens on Easter day.
9. Twas the Morning of Easter Glenys Nellist
Come along for this beautifully written story about the morning of Easter. Follow Mary as she finds the empty tomb then runs to tell the disciples that Jesus is risen in this Easter picture book.
If you’re looking for a book that will help your preschooler understand the first Easter, Twas the Morning of Easter is the perfect Easter book. Told in a similar rhyme as the classic Christmas poem, with bold illustrations, and an important story, it will stick with your preschooler for years to come.
10. Bear Finds Eggs Karma Wilson
When Bear goes out looking for eggs, he leaves a gift with each one he finds. But when Mama Meadowlark can’t find her eggs, the egg hunt takes on a different purpose. As Bear and his friends rally together to help Mama, Bear finds something valuable this Easter.
This simple, sweet book will help your child think about kindness and hard work this Easter, rather than getting their hands on as many eggs as they can find.
I hope you found some great Easter books on this list of our favorite books that will help you take a moment this Easter to build some connection into your Easter morning.
